bitman05 : 29/10/01 11:30 PM : Incident created
-   I have a multimonitor system, using KDE. I am a newbie to Linux. Linux correctly configured both video cards independently; however, I cannot figure out how to "position" the monitors within Linux.

Monitor on the right has an ATI Rage I/II 215GT (Mach64 GT) chipset.
Monitor on the left has a S3 (86c325 VIRGE) chipset.

Both are PCI cards.

In order to get from the Right monitor to the left monitor, I have to move my mouse off the RIGHT side of the right monitor, upon which it enters the left side of the left monitor.

I'd like to be able to drag and drop between desktops ... but I won't be greedy! I'd just like to move from right to left in a normal fashion.

Thanks in advance .... Dave

-   Hi,
a quick trick would be to swap both monitors. So you would exit the left
monitor to the right and enter the right monitor on the left.

-   I think you're not using Xinerama...

Actually you have 2 display (In the X window meaning, not monitors).

This really interresting for example if you want to have kde and gnome at the
same time, but 2 display are 2 differents desktop.
You need to activate Xinerama if you want your 2 displays to act as one.
When you have setup xinerama, there are option to define your screen layout...

-   There is no GUI to do that, as far as I know. The trick is probably to edit
your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and swap the parts talking about the two
videocards. Be sure to save the existing file to your homedir (for example) in
case you completely screw up the file.

-   Alex ... yeah, that was my first "blinding flash" to solve the problem ... unfortunately I'd need to reconfigure my Windows (dual-boot system).

Thanks for your help. I'll try Xinerama first! ;-)

-   I'll try this ... I think I tried it last night and my display became garbled ... at which point I "reset" and Linux reverted back to dual display, two separate desktops.

-   GC ... although I've been around PCs for years, this is my first Linux system, and I'm having difficulty simply navigating ... and I feel like an idiot. I'll attempt to edit if Xinerama doesn't work. Thanks for the help.

-   the xinerama extention will turn your two displays into one desktop if that
is what you want and you can do it via mandrake control center in the
display section
