- I have run Mandrake for years as my only operating system at home. I updated mandriva 2006 with the latest updates. Now the computer won't boot into the X system. The error messages are:
xauth error while loading shared libraries
libXau.so.6 cannot open shared object file. No such file or directory.
/usr/X11R6/bin/xauth cannot open shared object file. No such file or directory.
xinit cannot open shared object file. No such file or directory.
libX11.so.6 cannot open shared object file. No such file or directory.
I found a rpm that should (in my mind) reinstate the missing files:
xorg-x11-6.9.0-5.2.20060mdk.src.rpm
1) Am I on the right track with this rpm?
2) How do I download and run the rpm when I am not very familar with shell commands? (I can't go to the internet on my own computer without graphics and I don't know any other linux users to download the rpm for me!)
Any help that doesn't mean a new install is appreciated!

- That is not the RPM you want. Note the 'src' in the filename, that means it is the
'source' RPM, which is used for compiling the program, not for installing.
If your system was configured to download updates from the Internet, all you will
have to do is log in as 'root' at the console, and do:
# urpmi.update -a
# urpmi xorg-x11-xauth
This should install xorg-x11-xauth , but you may also want to run:
# urpmi --auto-select
This will ensure that all updates are done.

- I tried your advice and all sorts of errors came up - mainly that it couldn't find the update mirror that I have set up previously.
The bottom line is that I finally did a fresh install of Mandriva and all worked OK. I then did an update of only the Xorg components and X failed to load again - with a whole new lot of error messages.
I then removed the video card (ATI Radeon (fglrx) and used the on-board SiS Real256E video driver and X is working fine again now!
Is there a known problem with this update of Xorg? I know everyone complains about ATI, but I have had no problems until this Xorg update.
I would like to get the ATI card working again - any ideas?
thanks from an enthusiastic Mandriva supporter with limited technical knowledge!

- More details:
The video card is a Radeon 9200
If I disable 3D acceleration, X works OK
With hardware acceleration enabled, X won't start

- Your issue with the repositories could have been solved by removing the old
media before adding the new:
# urpmi.removemedia -a
As for your problem with the ATI card, try running 'XFdrake' in a console as root,
prior to starting X, and see if it will install the required packages for 3D.
If not, try doing:
# urpmi ati-xorg
