- The telnet server is actually controlled by 'xinetd'. xinetd is used to control services that do not have to run all the time, so 'xinetd' waits for a request for
that service, and then starts the requested service. Usually pop3 mail, FTP, telnetd and similar services are started this way. ProFTPd is defaulted to
'standalone' mode in Mandrake, but could be controlled by 'xinetd'.
So, you can either turn off 'xinetd' if you don't have any services other services being controlled by it, or you could edit the 'telnet' file in '/etc/xinetd' and
change 'disable = no' to 'disable = yes'
And I would _highly_ recommend running openssh-server instead of the telnet server, as it is secure (in telnet, your passwords, and everything you type, is
sent in plain text across your connection).

- The support I've received is extremely clear and solved my doubts !
As a personal remark on the point of my problem, I would find it useful to be able to start/stop (or temporarily disable) services on the fly, e.g. through ControlCenter, even if they are managed by xinetd. This is not the Expert's fault obviously ... :-)
