-   It seems Lilo cannot handle my external usb drive. I had the drive turned off when I installed so it wasnt listed in fstab. Its fine if I turn the drive on after Linux loads, but I forgot. It asked me to do a config and I declined. It asks me to do a file system check, then goes to a command line. Out of interest I used mc to look at fstab and to my horror it just has a string of at symbols.

Is there a Linux equivalent of fixmbr?

I really don't want to have to type in the fstab, as it would be a guess and a wrong one at that.

Should I use grub instead? Can it handle external drives?

-   Do you mean your /etc/fstab is corrupted and you want to recreate it?

In this case you should you your Install-CD1 and make an update installation.
This will recreate your /etc/fstab file.

To configure lilo you edit /etc/lilo.conf and execute /sbin/lilo afterwards.
