norcuron : 24/07/04 05:48 PM : Incident created |
- mozilla has stopped working. When I click on the icon from the menu it says "starting mozilla" in the task bar, but then it quits without ever opening. Is there a config file I can delete and start over, or is the problem more complex than this?
Thanks,
Tim Cummings

- Try two things:
1. Launch mozilla from the console to see if there are any errors (press
'ALT-F2' and type 'konsole' and then type 'mozilla').
2. If you can determine what the error is, you can move the mozilla
configuration files to a backup area and launch mozilla again (open console
and type 'mv .mozilla .mozillaback' (Note: your bookmarks, settings, etc will
be in .mozillaback, so you can copy them back over if it works).

- Ok, I did what you said. I typed mozilla from konsole. The error said Segmentation fault. I then followed your second advice and typed "mv .mozilla .mozillaback" From there I typed mozilla again and it just sits there with no error, but no action. Now what?

- Have you upgraded/installed anything lately that may be conflicting with
Mozilla? If it is segfaulting, it's usually caused by a conflict....

- I installed some updates from mandrake yesterday, and I installed real player (which I hate, but needed for something) but have never found where realplayer went. That's about it I think. What exactly is a segmentation fault anyway?

What exactly is a segmentation fault anyway? I did uninstall mozilla and re-install it right before you responded to me, but that did not fix the problem. Should I have rebooted inbetween uninstalling and reinstalling?

- A segmentation fault is another way of saying 'crash'. It is usually caused
when there is a library or glibc conflict.
What packages did you update?

- There were four files that had to do with a security update for Samba. I cannot remember exactly what they were called. Is there a way to uninstall everythiing up to a certain point like with Windows System restore? Or maybe remove software individually by date with the remove software tool?

- Unfortunately no.
It usually won't clear anything up, but have you rebooted since the problem
started?
You might also try running it as root (ALT-F2, konsole, su then mozilla)

- I have rebooted many times and that doesn't seem to fix anything. I went into the remove software tool and selected leaves only, sorted by install date and removed packages up to the Samba files that were installed, but that did not fix it either. What if I deleted the mozilla 1.6 directory and removed the usr/bin/mozilla files....?

- Try uninstalling mozilla, then delete anything left over
(/usr/lib/mozilla-x.x, .mozilla (backup first)).
Then try re-installing mozilla, and see if that clears it up.
