- Hello guys,
I just moved to Linux from Windows XP due to security reason. I've protected my self previously on Windows with antivirus, trojan scanner, premium firewall, and spyware remover.
My question is, is there any of those software that runs on linux that is reliable enough? Or should we manually configure the internet system on Linux? Can you tell me what is the most secure settings but still give us convenience on surfing the net?
Thank you

- The first thing to do is to _never_ run the system as root, but only as a
user. Access 'root' functions by using the console to 'su' to root if
required. Tools within Mandrake that require root access will ask for the
root password.
If your system is not a server, you can set the security level to '3' (see
below) and you should be OK, as long as you are keeping up-to-date with patches.
If you are running servers on the box (apache, postfix, etc), you should run
the included firewall, and set the security level to '4' at least.
msec info: http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/msec.php
Setting msec level:
- open a console (ALT-F2 and type 'konsole')
- switch to root (type 'su' and press enter, then enter your root password)
- type 'msec 3' (or msec '4')
- Another method is to open the Mandrake Control Center:
- click on the 'star' on your KDE kicker
- Go to 'Administer Your System/Configure Your Computer'
- Go to 'Security/Levels and Check'
- Set the security to 'High' or 'Higher'
Enable the firewall:
- click on the 'star' on your KDE kicker
- Go to 'Administer Your System/Configure Your Computer'
- Go to 'Security/Firewall'
- Take the checkmark out of 'Everything (no firewall)' and click OK
- If you need to allow services into your system, go back to the Firewall
configuration and allow them in.
