kernel update and no boot links found

- Dear Sir,
I just upgraded my system with several bugfixes and security updates using software manager. One of those updates was a kernel security fix that changed my kernel from 2.4.8-26 to 2.4.8.34. While there were no errors during the update and I see /boot/2.4.8-34.1mdk, I seemed to have lost the files that my /boot links were pointing to which referred to the 2.4.8-26 kernel:
/boot/config
/boot/initrd.img
/boot/System.map
/boot/vmlinuz
Im scared to reboot my system and have it not find its kernel. While I know how to create a link to the new kernel in vmlinuz, I dont know how to recreate the other files. Also do I need to do anything to lilo. Also, why didnt the kernel update create these files for me. I would think that would be part of any kernel update.
Please Help.

- Kernel updates are meant to be done 'by hand' (newer versions of Mandrake Update do not allow you to update the kernel).
To fix the problem, simply remove the symbolic links that are ther (/boot/config, /boot/initrd.img, etc...) and then recreate them, pointing to the correct files:
# cd /boot
# ln -s config-2.4.8-xx config
# ln -s initrd-2.4.8-xx.img initrd.img
# ln -s System.map-2.4.8-xx System.map
# ln -s vmlinuz-2.4.8-xx vmlinuz
Replace the 'xx' with the actual extention.
After that is done, check your '/etc/lilo.conf' to see if it has the correct entry, and then run '/sbin/lilo' to reload LILO. If no errors are generated, you should
be able to reboot.

- I dont seem to have a new initrd.img file for the new kernel.
I do have one for vmlinuz, system.map and config.
What do I need to do to create one?

As a user doing a first time install, I like to get my system updated with the newest security and bug fixes right after the initial install. I do this in Windows and Im sure Im not the only one. If Mandrake is to continue to help spread the word of Mandrake's ease of use then they should understand the customers needs during the first 30 days of install. I was not requesting help on upgrading the kernel to a new version from your development software (cooker), I was simply upgrading a security patch from your site which I believe should be a standard process in this unsecure world we live in and wish to protect ourselves. I understand there are limits to support, but given this day and age, updates and fixes (security or bugs) should be part of the 30 day support option as long as your software believes its a valid update and not a developmental one. Part of being a software company is to make sure your software is secure for your customers, while I applaud and praise your new update feature, I do recommend you do a better job at supporting your loyal customers who want to continue purchasing your software because they believe in your product.
