ashank : 08/03/04 08:14 PM : Incident created
-   I've run this version of Mandrake on a couple of my boxes and have noticed, on both, that the CPU seems to be at 100% usage all the time, even when idling, no running programs, no open windows, etc.! This can't be normal. What could be hogging the CPU and how do I stop it? Could it be stuff running in the background, if so why would it be hogging all of the CPU!!?? Thanks in advance.

-   What are you using to monitor the CPU? A 'kernel idle' process was added,
and some programs misread this as a running process.

At a console (ALT-F2 and type 'konsole') run 'top' and see what process is
taking up the CPU.

-   It would appear that your CPU is 97% idle.

Cpu(s): 0.0% user, 0.3% system, 0.0% nice, 99.7% idle

What app where you using that was showing 100% usage?

-   Nothing. I just ran 1 of the system monitors that comes with Mandrake. Why would idle be at 99%?

Linegod_7611 : 10/03/04 07:29 PM : Reply received
-   '99% idle' means that 99% of your CPU is _unused_. This is actually
monitored by a process, and some old system monitors misinterpret this 'idle
monitor process' as a true process, and report 'idle' as 'used'. Newer
monitors (like those in 9.2 and 10 - ie gkrellm), will report this properly.
