-   the aumix vol 0,0 means your volume is muted!

in Xwindows, open the console and type aumix turnup the volume and make sure it;s not
muted. sometimes you have to mute it then unmute it.

(whenever you install alsa or sound the default is muted so you have to unmute it and turn
up the sound.)

Best Regards

-   i for got to add that i already tried that. when i did the troubleshooting i just forgot to unmute it.

what about the lines that read:

[anathema@localhost anathema]$ /sbin/chkconfig --list sound
sound 0:off 1:off 2:on 3:on 4:on 5:on 6:off
[anathema@localhost anathema]$ /sbin/chkconfig --list alsa
alsa 0:off 1:off 2:off 3:off 4:off 5:off 6:off

all of the alsa ones say off.
also, is there a oss/alsa conflict?

thinkliberty : 13/01/04 04:20 AM : Reply received
-   The Chkconfig stuff is just the runlevel that the services run on, if your driver is OSS then
you don't need ALSA leave it off. Some drivers uses both, most use one or the other, running
it as a service when you don't need it is just wasted system resources.

-   my driver is alsa. i thought you could tell that from my post e.g. snd-via82xx. i thought all alsa drivers started with 'snd'

i got it to work. there was one fader in kmix that was muted. i had been looking at aumix exclusively. how can i give control to one or the other so they do not get confused with each other.

now if i could only get my camera to work. if you have any thoughts, i have an incident open on it.

-   With your driver being alsa I would use alsamixergui to control your sound.

urpmi alsamixergui

to install it. It has everything.

-   thanks for the help, will try that mixer..

however, there is still one more problem.

when i use Xmms it eventually outputs straight up white noise, sometimes in the middle of a song, sometimes right when i hit play. i have to hit stop and play a gain a few times to get it to work. xine seems to work fine. i think it usess OSS, is this why?

-   Under the KDE control center (configure your desktop) under sound then sound system there
is a section for skip prevention play with the setting inrease the memory buffer hit apply then
decrease it then hit apply hitting test sound until your sound sounds ok.

you can also specify alsa instead of autodection in the second tab.
