calban_6502 : 02/11/03 05:54 AM : Incident created
-   I have installed MYSQL but when I try;

mysql -h host -u user -p (using the linux box hostname and the root or another username), I get the message

ERROR 2002: Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

Can anyone assist please?

Bob

-   Is the server running?

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql status

If it isn't, do:

# /etc/rc.d/init.d/mysql restart

And as a side note, if you are connecting to localhost, you don't have to use '-h hostname'. As a
second note, by default, MySQL does not have a root password, so don't use the '-p' and then set
a root password as soon as possible: http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Security.html

-   Tried your comments but they didn't work. Same error returned. I also set the mysql password to something I knew and that didn't work either. I also set the current user to the mysql group and the mysql group to the user and that doesn't work either.

Most frustrating

Bob
