- Hi,
I currently have a dual boot with Mandrake 9.1 and WinXP using LILO. Is there an easy way to upgrade Mandrake to 9.2 without bothering my Windows partition?
Also, sometimes I have trouble installing/uninstalling programs for linux. When there's no rpm available, and there's only the gzipped file, I run the usuall make, make intall, etc commands to install the program. How do I uninstall a program that was installed in this manner? Do I manually go around and delete files? (How do I know which files to delete, and where?) Or is there some application that can automatically uninstall programs for me? (Maybe some program that can create rpms from gzipped files.)
thanks a bunch,
alan

- If you are using grub or LILO to manage your dual boot, updating to 9.2 should
not effect your Windows install.
To uninstall a file that has been installed with 'configure/make/make install', go
back to that directory you ran those commands from and run 'make uninstall'.

- Thanks for the reply.
So, how do I upgrade to 9.2? Do I just download the ISO images and boot from the CDs? Or is there an easier way?
Also, what if the "make uninstall" command doesn't work? Then how do I uninstall a program?
thanks,
alan

- If you have good bandwidth, the easiest way to upgrade is to add the 9.2 tree as a urpmi
repository. See http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/ on how to add the 9.2 tree. Then you would run:
# urpmi --auto-select
This will update all of your packages to the 9.2 tree. Otherwise, simply reboot with the 9.2 CD in
and select upgrade.
If 'make uninstall' does not work, you'll have to delete the files manually. That's why its usually best
to stick to RPMs.
