planetmcd : 29/07/03 05:09 PM : Incident created |
- I'm using Mandrake 9.1 and I have a 3com 3c509 network card connected to a cable modem.
I pull IP from my ISP, and my network card (eth0) is up.
I can connect to other hosts and ping other hosts by IP, but I cannot connect anywhere by name (e.g. www.google.com). When I SSH, I get this message:
ssh: [the domain I tried]: Temporary failure in name resolution.
I checked the /etc/resolv.conf and there are 2 nameservers and a search domain for a major ISP and at times I've put in another nameserve that I use at work (all of which I can ping by IP). Still no name resolution.
Anyone have an idea of where to look next?

- Check /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/draknet_conf for
DNSPrimaryIP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
DNSSecondaryIP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
If they are not set, set them, and restart the network:
# service network restart

- It turns out the network was fine. Linegod's advice was made me start to look at other things other than the network. It turns out I'd forgotten to open the DNS port. Stupid mistakes aree what always get me. Thank again.
