- My L-M 8.0 box freezes up with message 'segmentation fault' while creating large tar archives for backup. No key board echo and network login, have to resolve to use restart button to reboot. Then it went through fsck/e2fsck for the /dev/hda's, once done, the system was up as normal. The same problem occurs when rcp, tar or even cp large files locally.
I wonder if this is kernel's bug or just corrupted hard disks need reformat, like we had so often in MS Windows?

- Could you check your '/var/log/messages' for possible harddrive errors?

- I checked, the only relevant entry I found:
kernel: Partition check:
kernel: hda: hda1 hda2 < hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 hda9 >
....
kernel: Filesystem panic (dev 03:05)
can you tell me what was wrong?

- Is there any other info after 'kernel: Filesystem panic (dev 03:05) ' and can you check the output of 'dmesg'

- I checked, dmesg did not show any thing suspitious. I guess it may be the case that when the problem occurs the system hangs, freezes every thing and dead, so nothing is registered. I wonder if rebuilding the kernel would help?

- Most likely, not. You might try upgrading the kernel to a Cooker version.
The harddrive may also actually be at the beginning stages of a failure.

- Thanks, I guess I'd have to do a backup, (pretty difficult since I cannot create large archive locally or through rcp, rsh) and reformat the disk.
