- What advantages does Mandrake Network Firewall has over Redhat 7.2?
I' m about to install a hosting server (mail, htttp, ftp, etc.) and my boss wants to install Redhat 7.2. Which one is better and why?
Thanks.

- For what you want to do, I would go with neither. MNF is primarily designed to be used as a
firewall only, not as a firewall/server. RedHat 7.2 is a little 'old', so if you where going to go
with a Redhat distro, I would go with the latest - Redhat 9.0. I would recommend installing
Mandrake 9.1, and then enable the builtin firewall on it. Your best case scenario however,
would be to have a seperate firewall from your server.
The differences between the latest RedHat and the latest Mandrake are, for the most part,
superficial. What you should be looking for is something that you are comfortable with, if you'll
be doing the configuration.
I'm biased, but I believe that Mandrake has a better community, and timely updates for
security and regular fixes.

- Thanks, I can' t install a new version of Mandrake or RedHat because the hardware is a 586 with 32 Mb of ram and new versions would work very slowly.
Another person recommended me Debian Woody 3.0 (saying it is more secure) but is harder to configure.

- Thanks, The server I want to install is a 586 with 32 Mb of Ram and a 40 Gb hd (switched to 32 because if not the bios doesn't recogize de hd). It will be a web hosting server, it will run Apache, quota, wu-ftp, smtp (postfix or qmail), pop3 and webmail. It also will do nat to a subnet and run samba.
I'm viewing the posibility to upgrade this machine to a Pentium 200 or 233 with 64 Mb of ram.

- If you are going to use it primarily as a firewall, you could run a low
resource Window Manager, such as Fluxbox, and still have some functionality.
You would need at least 64Meg or RAM though.
Debian (Woody) is alot easier to install than it once was, but will still
require the same amount of resources that Mandrake would if you want to run
KDE or Gnome as your Window Manager.
