- I'm Linux ignorant, thus small problem: I repartitioned my hdd with FDISK previously to installation. Then I tried to install Mandrake. This was fine through the end, where due some setup error of the graphical card I ctrl-alt-del -ted the machine. Consequence: init error in boot up and lock-up of the system.
I try to redo the trick: FDISK, new install, ecc. Now: two errors happen. Sometimes Mandrake cannot start the second installation stage because it is incapable of uncompressing the RAMDisk. Sometimes it get's through to the installation prog. There now it happens that sometimes the screen freezes when trying to configure the mouse. SOmetimes I get further, till the repartitioning of the hdd, where it crashes regularly. I have tried to do FDISK again, but now it says on what previously was my ext2 that it cannot remove it (it shows up as a EXT DOS) because disks with logical drives on cannot be removed. But there is no logical drive .... this seems a bit like a deadlock due to my stupid beginners behaviour ....

- Boot with the Mandrake CD, and at the splash screen hit F1, and then type 'rescue' When it comes up, use the Linux fdisk to remove
the Linux partition (fdisk /dev/hda where 'hda' is the drive Linux is installed on). You should then be able to reinstall.

- Thanks. I remotely remembered that there was the rescue command, but now it's fine. The problem that gave rise to this whole incident was that after the installation linux could not boot the X11, and booted only with the prompt, tried nevertheless to start the X up. If that happens again, what should I do?

- Run 'XFdrake' to reconfigure your video card, and then run 'startx'.
