- I'm having serious issues trying to get any domain name I own to resolve to my local linux machine. Therefore Iwont be able to use email etc till I can figure this out.
Every bit of dns articles I've read asume that you already have a TLD type hostname - like www.abc.com,
well I'm on a cable connection at home, with a ip address and some god awful hostname that doesnt do anyhting for me.
Do I need to assign a new ip adress to use as a host? Or should I use the primary one given by my isp?
How can I make a domain name resolve to my computer for the first time?

- Do you have a static or a dynamic IP? Have you registered your domain name?

- I've been able to maintain the same ip for a LONG time now even tho my isp uses dhcp, and yes I have numerous domain names, but I've always used a hosting company with nameservers setup, now I wish to host my own domains.
thanks

- you can't use dhcp and hosting dns, some NIC provider like fr national NIC
wants two servers, because you dns server must ALWAYS (and not LONG) have the
same IP

- Like I said even tho my isp uses dhcp, my ip address never changes, unless I release the dhcp and renew it. I have even been able to get a few extra ip addresses using netconf , so this is not a problem as I should be able to assign the nameservers to the alternate ip's. I have not had any problem with IP addresses, just learning how to properly configure nameserver(s), thanks.

- You should use an ip from your isp. Try looking into /etc/resolv.conf. There should be your domain name and dnses.
