- We are using Mandrake 7.2 on our ftp, mail and web servers. The problem is that an item called logrotate repeatedly comes up and after about 2-3 days it starts really working the machine HARD, which brings the machine almost to a standstill. We have an RH7.1 box here too, but we don't get the same problem. What causes this and what is the easiest way to solve it?

- Check /var/log/messages to see if it is generating any errors. You might want to see if it is
compressing the logs (/var/log/xferlog , /var/log/httpd/access_log, etc) , or just moving them.

- logrotate change your files
/var/log/messages
in /var/log/messages.1.gz
etc... for all log files to save place in your /var
so or you have too big log files, maybe you log all rejected packet from
firewall
maybe , I remember there was this bug in 7.1, a bug in logrotate create too
mich inodes with files like
messages.1.gz.1.gz.1.gz.1.gz
so verify you file syteme and check for an update of logrotate
mabyyou majke an upgrade from 7.1 to 7.2 and you always have the bug

- There was a bug in 7.1, I don't recall it being in 7.2 (but you might want to update
your logrotate anyway)
________________________________________________________________________
There is a problem with logrotate where it continually archives the
files in /var/log/news and /var/log/mail whether they are already
archived or not. Because of this, the archives are never removed and
can cause the device to fill up. This update corrects this problem.

Please verify these md5 checksums of the updates prior to upgrading to
ensure the integrity of the downloaded package. You can do this by
running the md5sum program on the downloaded package by using
"md5sum package.rpm".

- Thanks for the prompt reply guys, I have already updated the boxes with the files you sugessted, all I am doing now is sitting back and waiting to see what happens. Do you recommend rebooting all my boxes that I did the update on, or is it not necessary?
thanks again

- Not necessary. I would restart all the major services although (httpd, postfix, inetd,
etc).
