root password not honored

chnlswmr : 27/11/01 07:48 AM : Incident created -   Newbie Linux user here. Just set up Mandrake 7.02 on a 486 box. All is fine, except: 'login: root' rejects the root password, even though 'su' accepts it. This happens no matter what password I assign (I've tried 3 separate and rules-legitimate passwords). chnlswmr : 27/11/01 05:24 PM : More info provided -   security level (i'm assuming the 'linuxconf' run level) is set to 3, out of choices 1-5.
