dwalkuhl : 20/12/02 06:15 PM : Incident created |
- I just installed Mandrake 9.0. The default machine name is "localhost". I
tried changing this in /etc/hosts but that had no effect. /etc/profile
specifies HOSTNAME=`/bin/hostname`, but that is not a textfile, so I can't
edit it.
So how do I change the host/machine name.
Same question for the domain name (default is "localdomain").
Thanks

- Edit '/etc/sysconfig/network' and edit HOSTNAME and DOMAINNAME . You will
have to restart your computer for changes to appear globally.

- Thank you, Linegod. This procedure fixed most of the problem.
Now at the bash prompt I get the folowing:
# hostname
newhostname.newdomainname
# domainname
(none)
But I get the same response for #domainname with the default configuration:
# hostname
localhost.localdomain
# domainname
(none)
This is my first incident -- I will convert to 'paid' when I close it.

- Try it with the '-d' option.
# domainname -d
Do a 'domainname --help' if you want to set it up for NIS.

- I had to convert my machine back to win98.
There were too many problems with Mandrake 9.0.
Matlab would not run, but it did with Mandrake 7.1.
My question to phone tech support was never answered.
It's a nice OS, but wouldn't do what I needed it to do.
