aewhale_(AEWHC2-9105 : 14/11/02 04:35 AM : Incident created
-   I cannot successfully complete the installation of Mandrake 9.0 on my Server. I am installing on an Adaptec 2940 SCSI controller.

I have attempted to use the cdrom.img file for the floppy installation, but that image also fails.

When the Installatio Hangs, the following errors are found on CTRL-ALT-4:

/tmp/i810fb.o: init_module: no such device
/tmp/imm.o: init_module: no such device
/tmp/ppc.o: init_module: no such device

How can I complete the installation with this SCSI device?

-   Also, this server ran LM 8.1 and 8.2 installations directly from the CD. Installation of 7.1 required a boot Image to successfully install.

Why are there these issues with SCSI Controllers?

alans : 14/11/02 10:56 PM : Reply received
-   server installation cd2 is bootable and has 3 alternate install kernels
available at initial boot time. boot up with it and try them in order and if
one doesn't solve the problem try the next one.

-   OK, I will try that.

Do you have any idea which one will work?

Also, I am using ext3 and reiserfs file systems. Could this present a problem with the installation?

-   I'm curious about what the default Kernel is on the Installation CD #1.

I am running 2.4.18 on a sister machine which is running LM 8.2. If this is the standard Kernel for INSTALL #1, then why does it not work properly?

alans : 14/11/02 11:29 PM : Reply received
-   2.4.19-16mdk is the installed default kernel. but the kernels used during
installation (install kernels) differ (are compiled especially for use during
an installation). no i have no idea which one might work.

8.2 and 9.0 used different compilers.

-   Alt2 Boots Fine, but then so did the Installation cd #1.

HOWEVER, alt2 does not appear to recognize the Reiser FS Filesystem.

I had two partitions which were requesting to be formatted (/usr & /var), both on separate
disk drives. Both Partitions failed the formatting processes. After they were reformatted as ext3
type partitions, the installation continued. Until it wanted to mount the /usr/share partition (which
was formatted as reiser FS) on top of /usr. This too required that the partition be formatted as
type ext3.

Can you fix (and/or report) this problem so that it does not occur in the future?

-   Looks like the Installer Failes AGAIN!

What Version of the Installer did you guys decide to use on this thing? Look I have 17 years of experience
with Computer Systems, but this installation is heading for one of the five WORST I ever had!

Now the Server Won't Boot because the Installer did not Order the File systems
in /etc/fstab so that installation would succeed, and the File Systems would actually
mount on Boot up.

Who would have ever thought that the /usr Filesystem needs to be Mount before the /usr/share
Filesystem, and IF the /usr Filesystem did not have a Mount Point for the /usr/share Filesystem
that it should be created!

I am REALLY Disappointted. This sloppiness makes it seem that the installation of the ProSuite
Server is really a Rank Amatuer install. Perhaps you should professionals test this installation
proccess for you.

-   One more report for this issue.

Inserting a Floppy Disk in the drive or removing it produces a Drive Changed Kernel
note. This also appears to hang the alt2 boot processes.

While I understand that the alt2 process is a 'backdoor' Installation tool, it certainly
makes it harder to backup the configuration used for the next installation.

I am available for opportunities on an Hourly Basis. I already have Consulting engagements
and Contracts in Curacao, and Aruba. My installation of Linux Manadrake in Aruba was the first
on the Island, and also resulted in a Happy Mandrake Customer (they were previously leaning
towards Suse).

-   have you tried the text install? this doesn't appear to be a scsi card
problem, but an on-board video card problem. your profile indicates a ati
cared while the error you reported indicates an on-board intel card.

-   I have upgraded the Motherboard on this machine listed. If you like, I'll update the machine
information on the registration info.

While I have brought the server up, it now crashes unexpectedly after a few days. Do you have any
suggestions?

alans : 22/11/02 07:41 PM : Reply received
-   yes you should upgrade your profile. are you running a gui? is it the gui
crashing or is it linux? what do the logs say?

-   THe part that Crashes is the Installation.

I've included the logfile information in the beginning of this case.
