ArcadEd : 13/11/02 11:47 PM : Incident created
-   Ok, the postfix server is running fine, I can email from it to others on my local subnet, however I cannot remotely telnet to it.
Here is what I have tried (FYI: Local Machine/Postfix server IP is 192.168.55.180)

From LocalMachine:
telnet 192.168.55.180 25
Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused
telnet 127.0.0.1 25
connects fine
From win2k box on same subnet
telnet 192.168.55.180 25
connection refused

Why would it let me connect to it via the loobback ip, but not the static ip?

Note, I have gone into the Mandrake Control Center - Security and firewall is not installed, if this helps, thanks.
Any thoughts and help is much appreciated, thanks

-   Addition:
I had my local mail client setup to send mail through 127.0.0.1 and it worked. When it change it to 192.168.55.180 it refuses to send? This is odd, maybe I should try changing IPs of the box and see what goes down.

-   Is the telnet server installed?

# rpm -qa|grep telnet

It should return with 'telnet' and 'telnet-server'

Also, is it enabled?

# drakxservices

-   If it wasn't installed or running, would I be able to get to it from the loopback IP? I will look when I get back to that computer tomorrow morning, thanks.

-   Whoa, sorry about all those posts, that is a little weird, must have happened when I tried to hit the back button a few times.

Anyway, telnet server was not installed. I got it installed, how do I enable it?

Thanks

-   In addition, from webmin, the service is started but on port 23? Anyway, it does look like the telnet server is installed and enabled.

-   Port 23 is the proper port for telnet.

Just as a note, if you are going to be accessing the box externally, I would
recommend using openssh, which is secure. You can use PuTTY to access it
from a Windows box, or NiftyTelnet to access it from a Mac box.

-   This will just be internal. I have software that requires the use of an smtp server to send mail to a fax server, that is all I need this for. However, when I try and send using an outlook client on another machine I get an SMTP error connecting to port 25
