- Hi,
After a few attempts to get a linmodem working, I decided to to go with an external modem instead.
I was able to set up the external modem -- Modem Blaster V.92 Serial model DE5621..... I think this is one of the supported hardware.
I set up the Internet Connection using Kppp & Mandrake Control Center "network and Internet" .
I am able to connect to my ISP (which is MSN.COM), but whent I load the browsers -- Modzilla -- Opera -- Galeon --I am unable to get to a web site. I was able to get to yahoo on one occasion.
I thought the problem was browser specific, but I am experiencing the problem with all three browsers.
Also, what do I need to do so that each users on the sytem can get connected. It seems like I don't have a problem connecting to the ISP with root, but trying to connect with a user other than root is not successful.
I will appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Other Info:
This machine has Mandrake 8.2 and Win 98 SE. When booted to the windows environment, it is used as the gateway for a peer to peer network with another machine running Win 98 SE.
I have not set up this machine to use Mandrake to network with the other windows machine at boot up, but aparently it recognizes the ethernet card and the ip address that is used for the computer when it is booted in Windows.
I saw some reference to a browser problem (not sure if it is related) at
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/docs/troubles/tqhvit3.html
The problem relates to Mandrake 8.1 , don't know if it has implications for Mandrake 8.2
Hope this additional info helps...

How do I determine this?
Is this a factor?

- Len, I have bad news if you want to continue with MSN.com (MSN=Microsoft
Network). If you check the terms-of-service to which you agreed when you
signed up for MSN.com, you will find that you must use Microsoft Internet
Explorer, Netscape, or a version of Microsoft Network Explorer on a machine
using Microsoft Windows 98 or later. MSN.com is hostile to all operating
systems other than Microsoft. MSN.com adds a software 'layer' between you
and the Internet to provide 'features' like SPAM-blocking and content-
filtering. That software layer is specifically designed to work only with a
Microsoft Operating system and a browser that complys with Microsoft
Network 'standards.' If you choose to use Microsoft Network, you mustuse a
Microsoft operating system. If you choose to use a GNU/Linux or BSD or
FreeDOS or BeOS or any other operating system, you will be unable to use
MSN.com. The solution is to choose a different ISP is you choose to use an
operting system other than Microsoft. I recommend that you do so.

- Here is good point to start:
http://maryland.findanisp.com/
When you choose your town, then you can click on "More Information" about
every ISP. On most ISPs you can find "Platform Supported" field.
Unfortunatelly most of ISP don't know Linux very well, so they write only
Windows na Mac. My ISP (I'm in Indiana is a small, cheap and fast enough. I
use it under Linux, but on this page they didn't mention Linux... :(
I hope you can understand my poor English :-)
If that answers to your question , please close incident. Thank you
