-   Asking "vlc" to open and play "/dev/dvd" produces no results.

I can mount "/dev/dvd" as a UDF filesystem. I can play a DVD in Windows.
But I cannot play a DVD with "vlc".

I am running Mandrake 8.1 on a Dell laptop (Inspirion 8100), with the following packages installed:

vlc-ncurses-0.2.83-1mdk

vlc-qt-0.2.83-1mdk

vlc-0.2.83-1mdk

vlc-gnome-0.2.83-1mdk

vlc-gtk-0.2.83-1mdk

On my system, "/dev/dvd" is a symbolic link to "/dev/cdroms/cdrom2", a block special device (11/0).

What is wrong with my "vlc"?

-   I have never been able to get vlc to work on any of my boxes. I would try
Ogle - http://www.dtek.chalmers.se/groups/dvd/downloads.shtml . There is
no gui interface, but it does work quite well.

-   I could not get "vlc" to play a DVD. Expert "linegod" suggested that I install "ogle". After installing "ogle" with the optional "libdvdcss" component, I was able to play DVDs.

Recommendation for Mandrake maintainers: include "ogle" in the distribution; in the description of "vlc" say that it will EVENTUALLY be able to play DVDs (as it currently cannot).
