lklektau : 16/11/01 03:21 PM : Incident created
-   I currently have a fairly new computer running Windows 2000. I've used Partition Magic 6 to create 2 partitions (one logical one primary). Both are NTFS. The primary partition contains win2k and all my installed apps. The logical partition contains about 10 gigs worth of data (mp3's, jpgs, etc.). I want to install Mandrake 8.1 over top of Windows, effectively getting rid of it. But I'd like to keep all the data on the logical partition intact. I would back it up if it was feasible (and have backed up the most important stuff to a cd), but 10 gigs is a lot.

Is this possible to do with the Mandrake installer? Or if I ask it to overwrite windows, will it want to wipe my entire harddrive? Assuming it is possible, will it treat the data partition as just another partition that I can name (/data or whatever I want), or will I have to mount it as an NTFS volume?

Thanks for your help

-   When given the option, select 'Expert' mode, and when you get to the
partitioning portion, you will be able to select which partition you want to
install Mandrake on. Simply clear the first partition, and create your
linux partitions in there. You will be able to name the mount point to
/data, but it will still be an NTFS partition.

You didn't say how large your primary partition was. If it is large
enough, I would do a very minimal install of Linux on the primary, and then
once up, move the data over to the Linux partition, format the data
partition as a Linux partition and then move the data back onto it. I would
recommend ext3 or XFS file systems if you are installing Mandrake 8.1
