-   When I install 8.2, I dont get the option of which X version to install, I just get a framebuffered version of 3.3.6. (Using GeForce4 Ti4200)

Ok, I said, so I'll go and get the nvidia drivers. After installing the kernel patch and GLX module, and reading every man page under the sun, I can now type "XFree86" and see the nvidia logo, followed by a gray screen and a cross mouse pointer. This tells me my Xserver is working with my hardware and configured correctly.

But now if I try to startx, i get the error

"execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)"

followed by

"xinit: No such file or directory (errno2): unable to connect to X server"

I'm assuming this is because it's still trying to load the 3.3.6 Xserver, which has now been removed and replaced with 4.2.0.

I get similar errors with xinit and xdm / kdm / gdm.

Can anyone help me to get my Mandrake login screen back? Which config files, etc. do I need to alter.

Thanks for any help in advance.

-   First, reconfigure the X server by running, as root:

# XFdrake

Once it is done, test your configuration with:

# startx

Then logout, and follow the directions in the NVidia README for configuring
the proprietary driver, then logout and login as a user and try 'startx'.
