geerta : 07/09/02 11:42 AM : Incident created |
- I reinstalled Mandrake 8.2 on a new (second hand) computer a friend gave me.
I chose the "hard" setting under security during installation. Apperently that was a mistake
because now I can not log in to my own system as root. I can however log in as one of the users
I set up and then open a root Terminal window.
Is this normal. Where do I go if I want to change the security setting back to standard?
I do not want to reinstall the system again.
Thanks in advance

- You can set a security level from a root Terminal window:
msec 3
(read man msec for more help)
This will set the level 3.
It's the good level for to use your computer for simple internet connections.
And with this level you can log as root!
(PS: If OK, close this incident for give more free place!!!)

- .. You can use graphique mode too.
Start Mandrake Control Center (you will give your root's password), and go to
Security section.
Start the security level setup, and choose level 2 (the level 0 is not in this
window, then level 2 is , in fact, level 3 "middle level").
(PS: If OK, close this incident for give more free place!!!)

- If you like to keep the higher msec settings, but only allow root login, you
can also create the file /etc/security/msec/level.local containing
from mseclib import *
allow_root_login(yes)
then run msec without arguments
To obtain more informations, use man mseclib or see
http://www.mandrakesecure.net/en/docs/msec.php
