cjgunzel : 12/11/01 03:02 AM : Incident created |
- I just downloaded and installed the latest packages for SSH (both client and server) via the software updater and they wiped out Konqueror. Konqueror will not start either from an icon or a command line.

- Does starting 'konqueror' from a command line generate an error, or does it
just not load?
What happens if you try 'kfmclient openProfile webbrowsing'?

- Starting Konqueror from the command line produces nothing except a hung terminal.
Starting kfmclient as instructed returns to the command prompt with no other output or results.

If I log on as root or as an ordinary user su then konqueror appears to run normally. So I think it must be some simple permissions configuration issue but I haven't the foggiest idea where to look or what to do!

One additinal tidbit. After logon as user, su, type "konqueror", enter:
DCOPServer up and running.
kio (KLanucher): ERROR:KLauncher: KDEInit communication error! Commiting suicide!
Then Konqueror proceeds to run -- I'm using it to send this message.

- Try removing 'tmp-hostname' and 'socket-hostname' in '/home/username/.kde'
prior to logging in as a user.
Another thing to try if that doesn't work is to move '.kde' to '.kdebackup'
prior to logging in as a user. You will have to recover your user settings
from the .kdebackup folder, but it might be quicker than trying to track the
problem down to the exact file causing the problem.

Followed all of your advice. No joy. I also emptied everything out of /tmp that the links in .kde could point to but to no avail. Next login rebuilds .kde directory and resets sound (presumably other things) but rebuilds my desktop icons (changes backgroud) exactly as they were.?
If Mandrake has not already done so I think they should pull the SSH updates from the mirrors until this is resolved. I can't believe I am the only one the updates would wipe out! (that would be anti-Norwegian discrimination!) :)
I'm going home from work exhausted and dejected. Maybe this problem will look better after a night's sleep! NOT!

- I wouldn't make much sense to pull 3.0 from the mirrors, as cooker is meant
to be a developers area, and packages in there are expected to be unstable.
You could try launching 'kfmclient' and then try switching to Web Browser.
The last thing I can think of is to try starting the DCOP server prior to
attempting to launching Konqueror - 'dcop'

Starting dcop does not fix the problem.
Are you saying when I use the software manager to update security fixes, I am applying patches from cooker that are untested with the distro? If that is so, then the policy needs to be changed. Using the software manager to upgrade on-line has an implication that the upgrade works with the distribution for which it is being recommended. Cooker is a separate issue and, as you say, if someone uses Cooker they should expect problems.

- The latest openssh as an update is 2.9.9p2-2.1mdk for 8.1, 2.9.9p2-2.2mdk
for 8.0, and 2.9.9p2-2.3mdk for 7.2. The 3.0 series of openssh is only
available via cooker.
If you are simply opening Software Manager, you are not getting 'security
updates' unless you click on 'Mandrake Update' and select 'security updates'
You might want to uninstall 3.0 and revert back to 2.9.9 series and see if
it resolves your problem.

- Hi Linegod:
What I installed was from the 2.x series through the software manager. I, and I think most people, would assume these updates have been tested with the distro where they show up in the on-line updates software.
I tried to uninstall the ssh package (using the package manager) but there were so many dependencies I decided it wasn't worth it. Looks like I'm in for a reinstall and DO NOT UPDATE from the software manager! NOT good PR for Mandrake. I'm going to test with SuSE7.3 and see if the ssh update wipes out the installation there too.

- Don't uninstall! Go to the command line and do:
# rpm -qa|grep openssh
This will give you a list of packages, you then simply run:
# rpm -e openssh openssh-server openssh-client
And add any other openssh packages that it picked up. If it says there are
a bunch of dependancies, and you know you are going to re-install openssh
right after you uninstall, add --force to the end of the rpm statement.
# rpm -e openssh openssh-server openssh-client --force
You can then manually download the openssh packages from a mirror and
install them:
# rpm -ivh openssh*rpm
If you end up going with Suse, at least you're still using Linux :)

Thanks for your response but too late. I alread installed again. I wanted to reconfigure my disk again anyway. A real pain loading all my software again though!
I'm not leaving Mandrake. I'm a Mandrake junkie but all the bugs in 8.1 are driving me buggy! And SuSE has plenty of problems of their own. They don't even include a mail client that works (gui). At least even though Kmail is broken, Mandrake included Evolution and something I've found called Sylpheed. So at least I can collect my mail. The only gui mail client I've found in SuSE is the broken Kmail! Then there is the brokenness of FTP in Mandrake 8.1. I got a message that it's been fixed (I complained atthe RC1 feedback site) but I haven't found any new ftp client on a mirror yet so I don't know where the fix went. I use FTP a lot to move large files and when it times out every few megs it's a terrible pain! And of course this problem we've been discussing with ssh wiping out Konqueror.
I've reinstalled and I'm back to Konqueror. I won't install the ssh updates until at the least the next release is out. I keep hoping Kmail will get fixed. And I keep hoping FTP updates will get released.
Thanks for your assistance. It appears there is no solution for this problem at this time. I hope it's fixed in KDE2.2.2!!

- OK, glad to hear you're sticking around :)
I think we can close this one out for now. If you have any further
problems, post them up (hopefully we can fix them :))
