-   When I login from the graphical interface as 'root', am I at the same place as if I had typed su - at a terminal or am I at su ?

-   The 'su' command is used to 'Switch User', but when you type 'su' at a terminal
without specifying a user, your terminal is running as root. If you log in graphically
as 'root', every action you do is as root. This is not recommended, as you could
delete/destroy settings as root.
