-   Mounting a cd is incredibly slow for the first time after a reboot (10 minutes) after it's mounted, everything is fine, all CDs mount quickly. When I reboot, the next cd is slow again

-   When you go to mount the cd for the first time, open up a console and type:

# tail -f /var/log/messages

Monitor this log to see if there are any errors.

-   Install the 'hdparm' package if it is not already installed, and then as
root, type:

# hdparm -d 0 /dev/hda

This will disable DMA, which is causing your problem.

This is a kernel issue, and should be resolved with the latest kernel from
the security updates. Which kernel are you using?
