-   Dear sirs,

I have Mandrake Linux 8.2 and I experience the following problem: when X starts, I see a blank screen for about 2 minutes before the login dialog appears. What's wrong?

Thank you in advance for your help!
A. Matei

-   Check /var/log/messages for error messages, and run, as root:

# XFdrake

That program will reconfigure your X.

I've tried XFdrake, the problem persists. I think there's something wrong with the way Mandrake handles my video board - S3 VirGe GX/ - if I load the Mandrake Control Center, change my resolution and then test it to see if it's O.K., it also lasts a long time until the Linux logo appears... Or maybe there's a memory problem, I don't know, what do you think?

-   Sorry for the mistake, my video card is S3 Virge GX/2, AGP, 4 Mb.

-   What type of processor do you have, and how much memory?

You might also be running unneeded services in the background, causing the system
to be slow.
