- Check for a logfile in the /var/log directory, if there isn't one you could
look for configuration files for proftp in the /etc directory and you might be
able to see where it's at or set it there. If all else fails, check the
startup script under /etc/initd and set logging parameters manually. To see
the logging options run "man proftpf" or "proftpd --help".

- Try issuing, as root:
#/etc/rc.d/init.d/proftpd restart
The configuration file for proftpd is '/etc/proftpd.conf' , and unless you
have changed the configuration, you should be able to see login attempts in
'/var/log/messages'.
Try running 'tail -f /var/log/messages' and then attempt to login, and see
if it generates an error.

- These are the two lines that were added to /var/log/messages by proftp after an (unsucsesful) atempt to log in from an other (Windows) system:
Nov 6 04:38:10 linux1 proftpd[6089]: linux1.lelieveld.nl - Failed binding to 0.0.0.0, port 21: Address already in use
Nov 6 04:38:10 linux1 proftpd[6089]: linux1.lelieveld.nl - Check the ServerType directive to ensure you are configured correctly.
I have (up until now) changed noting in the config of proftp, it is a new install of Mandrake 8.1. All other servers (like HTML and SMB) work OK.What do you sugest to get it working (i am a newbe on this).

- For the first error, check that your security level (draksec) or your
firewall isn't blocking access.
For the second error, check '/etc/proftpd.conf' for the following lines:
ServerName "ProFTPD Default Installation"
ServerType standalone
DefaultServer on

- The security level on this system is set on the lowest (it is just a privite system on a closed home net network).
The 3 lines in de proftpd.conf are the same as you write (i have not changed the configuration sinds the install of the system).
What i also find a bit strange is that when i try to stop proftpd (as root) by typing '/etc/rc5.d/S85proftpd stop' the system reacts with '[FAILED]'.
Any sugestions?
Thanks in advance.

- I dicided to try to deinstall and reinstall proftp, this seem to have solved te problem. After a restart of the system it was posible (from the Windows PC) to connect to the Linux PC by FTP.
Thanks for your help!

- Glad to hear it's working. Don't quite understand why a reinstall would
fix it, but at least it works :)
