- Hello,
Local mail exchange works well. But for sending and receiving mail from my ISP i have a username and a password.
How do I configure POSTFIX for sending and receiving mail from my local ISP?
The dialup is done via crontab (/usr/sbin/sendmail -q)
Thanks for help

- Postfix is not used for getting mail from your ISP, you want to get the 'fetchmail' RPM.

- Postfix can send mail through your ISP's SMTP server (I'll get to receiving
later) by setting the relay parameters. To do this,
edit /etc/postfix/main.cf.
you'll want to edit the relayhost option. If you're using a Mandrake version
of Postfix, this option is well documented (search for relayhost).
Essentially, you want to end up with an (uncommented) line that reads like:
relayhost = [your ISP's SMTP server]
That's completed. Send a test message to a throwaway Yahoo or Hotmail
account and examine the Received: headers. They should show that mail was
sent from your computer to your ISP's SMTP server, maybe through some other
relays, and to your throwaway account's mail server. You may want to edit
the mydomain parameters and configure your MUA to report your ISP mail
address in the From: line.
Receiving mail from your ISP's servers isn't difficult. To do this, I
recommend the Fetchmail program. A graphical configuration front-end exists,
which allows you to configure your mail setup (POP vs. IMAP etc.). It's
possible to configure, using scripts, Fetchmail to start whenever you dial up
and stop whenever you disconnect. However, because I use a LAN connection, I
do not know off the top of my head how to do this. You may want to look in
the /usr/share/doc/ directory for the fetchmail documentation, which includes
some sample scripts to automate various tasks.
You can also check the Fetchmail web site at
