I want to know how when i switch to Linux to excute the commands it tells me to( the first one being # tar xvzf xf41sav.tgz)where is the file? i dont know where i should download it so i can find it in my root directory

-   Download it to c: and then it will be located in '/mnt/windows'. You can then copy it to '/root'

cd /root
cp /mnt/windows/xf41sav.tgz /root
tar -xvzf xf41sav.tgz

-   i tried to type /mnt/windows. But it said it doesnt exist. i tried cd /mnt/windows too. Also a friend told me i could use "df" so i tried that and it showed me my filesystems. so i tried to go into "dev/hda1" but it said permission was denied.

-   ok i found out how to get the .tgz file to my root account(it was /mnt/win_c not /mnt/windows) but now when i go to do the commands found under the errata link on the linux-mandrake website. They are as follows
# tar xvzf xf41sav.tgz
# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers
# mv savage_drv.o savage_drv.o.bak
now when i do the next command it says it cant because there is no such directory(whats the last "." for on this command)
# mv /path/to/new/savage_drv.o .
and i havent gotten far enough for the last one
# chmod x savage_drv.o

-   exactly how are you typeing that command?

you are probably typeing it wrong

it is wanting you to move the file from the present spot that it is at to the spot it needs to be it is a little cionfusing the way they have it

and also try not useing the last period in the line there is no nothing after the o the drivers name is

savage_drv.o

that is it nothing else

if this solve your problem dont forget to close the incident if not let me know

-   ok so i typed the line
# mv /path/to/new/savage_drv.o . but i left out the last "." this time instead of saying no directory exists it said mv: missing file argument.
I know the first move worked because the savage_drv.o.bak is in the /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers directory. What does the # mv /path/to/new/savage_drv.o command do? Is there another way to do what i want it to do. I dont see any /path/to/new directories.

-   well that is the problem there is no path like that try useing this

cd /root
mv savage_drv.o /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/savage_drv.o

let me know if that works

remember you must be root

-   Below is what i have been going from. Now i did what you said and moved the savage_drv.o file from root to the ../drivers/ directory. Then i did # chmod x savage_drv.o and nothing visible happened. I then switched to my username account and typed startx and got the error "execue failed for /etc/x11/x (errno 2).

Error scenario: Whenever Mandrake Linux 8.1 tests the X configuration or tries to run X, the system freezes. This may affect all motherboards with the KM133A or PM133A VIA chipsets.
Why: The second revision of this motherboard has a new revision of the Savage4 graphics adapter; one that causes XFree86 4.1.0 to crash badly with.
Solution: Install Mandrake Linux normally and accept it's selection for the video card (Savage4). Do not test the configuration and do not allow it to start X upon bootup. Download the file xf41sav.tgz and then, as root, extract the savage_drv.o file by using:

# tar xvzf xf41sav.tgz
# cd /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers
# mv savage_drv.o savage_drv.o.bak
# mv /path/to/new/savage_drv.o .
# chmod x savage_drv.o

Now, as a normal user, execute "startx" on the command line and you can then configure X to start automatically on subsequent boots via Mandrake Control Center. (Thanks to Damon Lynch for this fix.)

and set the card up
