- Partition Check on 8.1 install freezes computer. I use ata100, and i have the settings put into for install, and it sees the hard drive just find,
but it hits the partition check and the computer enters a hard freeze. Requiring me to restart in order to continue.

- after loading your CD, press F1 and type this at the boot prompt
boot:linux vga=0 ide=reverse
see if you can get thru the install with that.

- I don't think that i should have to disable ata100 because i have been using it with Mandrake 8 since the second day it came out.
Thanks both of you for the comments, i greatly appreciate it.
What does ide=reverse do?

- ATA controllers need to recognize the drives connected to it as hde-hdh and
not hda-hdd. you can check it out during the install by pressing ctrl-alt-f2
and do the command:
dmesg

- I've got an Asus A7V that exhibits the same problem. It has ata100 but the
drives are not connected to that bus. It currently boots Win2K and I'm trying
to install MDK8.1 over it. It hangs during kernel boot during the partition
check. I've tried every conceivable kernel parameter, swapping cables,
drive/cd order, master/slave/cable-select, etc but no dice. I also tried
ide=reverse with no effect. As it turns out, it fails to boot alt2 from disc2
as well!
any ideas????
