-   I have a 64 bit laptop with an ati card and am using the proprietary
ati drivers for the X server.
BoardName "ATI Radeon 9500 - X850"
Driver "fglrx"

When I logout the X server appears to restart but I am left with a black screen with a cursor (_) top left of the screen.

If I try and switch users, the screen goes & stays black.

ie the login screen does not appear.

Shutting the laptop down and restarting works fine.

This may either be a Xserver problem or a problem with kdm
which I am running

-   Could you try pressing Ctrl Alt Backspace (<--) to kill the xserver and post
the result?
