-   Hi,
My Toshiba Satellite laptop (A105-2236) with new Mandriva 2007 powerpack installed,
finds 'NO soundcard', and has 'no modem' for 56k dialup. With no modem, I
cannot download RPMs from mirrors to update kernel, except from dualboot
WIndows Vista side. They have to be zipped to do this. We have no
ethernet/wifi svcs available in our area and depend on 56k modem.

I installed manually Realtek HD Audiopack for Linux, from mfr's site today, to find the soundcard & setup.
There is still no sound/volume. During install's 20 pages on Mandriva terminal, saw errors
mentioning DUMP and Kernel...also '(alsamixer???) volumes set to mute by
default', and Realtek driver install did detect TWO soundcards that Mandriva
failed to see. Only option given was to install one (chose snd_hda_intel). The
other soundcard seen was Legacy ISA nonPnP Chip. (The realtek installer uses
windows with radio buttons coming up in the Mandriva shell terminal and I
couldnt select both soundcards but I think this Legacy chip is necessary to
manually configure - if I only knew how).

Last screen of Realtek install gives a test sound, and suggests using a mixer
to alter volumes if none is heard. Several mixers are installed looking in
Mandriva packages, but when I click on them it gives "no gstreaming" etc.
errors and fails to call them up.

I have help from another source that only deals in installing linux modems; however
their help hasnt worked as no soundcard detected problem is hindering.

HOW to find kernel (kernel, header, source tree) updates (mine is 2.6.17.6.mdv) in a zipped fashion to
download to Vista, then go manually over to modem-less Mandriva side? And,
what commands/syntax to use to 'install' them manually? (kernel source tree, headers, etc).
Complete linux newbie here. (Finding path to desktop was a challenge to me).

Mandriva is my THIRD attempt at getting Linux and ditching windows; Knoppix
has sound but couldnt find modem and hogs up CD drive; SeUS couldnt dual boot
or find modem, erasing my Windows install; now Mandriva, dualboots fine, but
no sound and no modem. Yikes. All directions found so far on net re updating
kernel, expect that you have a working modem in Mandriva; none are geared
towards zipped RPM files safe to download into Windows, or where to find them.
