-   You may wish to read a recent article to see if you are someone that is affected:
http://linux.slashdot.org/linux/08/07/25/1150218.shtml
In light of such a discovery it explains why ACPI is somewhat difficult to work with for
many users even though it really shouldn't be (for people that understand how computing
works). You may need to have ACPI disabled, or turned-off maybe if this is causing a
problem.

Which motherboard are you using?
or which brand of computer?
so that I could search for possible solutions.

-   Okay, sounds like we have good details to work with, ASUS motherboard A7V8X-LA, Compaq
Presario SR1303WM. Doing a search on the internet, you have an HP computer, and you may
want to verify that you have the latest BIOS since the BIOS may have had some updates
done between the time you got your computer, and the time "now" that you are attempting
to try Linux. You will be interested in the latest BIOS and this is a starting-page to
begin your search if the pages pointed to below don't work okay.
http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html

This tells you how to update BIOS (watch out for line wrap errors below):
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00007682&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=447312&dlc=en

You are interested in verifying your BIOS is the latest version.
You have a Compaq Presario SR1303WM-B so it should be 3.15 right now.
If you have 3.15, it is about as updated as you're going to be, if not, you may want to
upgrade it first since some if not all problems may be resolved that way 1st.
While you are at it on the same web page, you could also check and upgrade
the "firmware" for your other hardware such as DVD or CDroms.

If the web page below does not look correct, you will need to search for it using the
appropriate search words (watch out for line wrap below):
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=447312&lang=en

Let's see if this solves your problem. :-)

-   I have updated my BIOS and tried to install linux but to no avail same error.
i really have no idea what to do!! :(

JoesCat2_5804 : 26/07/08 03:37 AM : More info requested
-   Well, we got one thing out of the way - upgraded BIOS :-)

So now, we may have Mandriva not recognizing your motherboard correctly, or ACPI is broken for that
motherboard.

Okay, try again with install. During install you will want to say "NO" or "OFF" to ACPI support.
This should allow you to install Mandriva, but there won't be any ACPI enabled on it. This means that
the fans in your motherboard will be running top-speed which is okay. A bit noisy, but okay.

Let's see if you get this working okay.
