Henri_de_Solages_356 : Incident created (04/07/08 04:04 AM)

- Hello.

How to change the default auxiliary softwares (plugins ?) used by Mozilla Firefox ? I'd like it to use KPDF instead of Acrobat reader, Kaffeine instead of the default video player plugin (which can't read my mpeg file for a reason I don't know).

- If you are using KDE desktop, go to menu and select the submenu program:

Menu->Tools->"System Tools"->"KDE Control Centre"

When the program begins, go to the left side of program screen and select:
"KDE Components"->"File Associations"

For a *.pdf file, I would suggest looking in
application->pdf

The above should change your settings on a per-user basis so your settings will not
affect other users settings.

If you want to do the change as a system-wide default change for all users, you will need
to use "Configure Your Computer" located in the menu as:
Menu->Tools->"System Tools"->"Configure Your Computer"

If the program you need is not listed in the choices possible and you need to find the
directory path to a particular program, you may find some programs by using the which
command (using the Console command-line), for example
which kpdf
will return
/usr/bin/kpdf

- Thank you for your quick answer. These file associations seem to be the ones
used by Konqueror, but are clearly not the ones Mozilla Firefox uses.

Regards.

- I submitted your problem as a "bug"
to Firefox/Mozilla. Please search
for bug
"Bug 443686 –
Preferences->Content->Manage file
types has no choice selection,
cannot choose kpdf instead of adobe
8 as default download plugin action"
on website bugzilla.mozilla.org/
I suggest adding yourself as a CC or
additional person with this bug.
This may already be a duplicate bug
or possibly a bug that is already
fixed for a future version of
FireFox, but I don't know.

For your problem, I'll indicate that
if you wish to use Opera 9.51, you
can follow these steps.
Opera:
Select the pull-down menu.
Tools->Preferences
Then select:
Advanced TAB (top row), then select
Downloads (on left column).

in the window, select
application/pdf and you want
to "Edit.." for a different action.
You have several buttons to choose
from:
1)Show download dialogue <- choose
this one (adobe has it as 6 below)
2)Open with Opera
3)Save to disc
4)Open with default application
5)Open with other application
6)Use plug-in (Adobe Reader 8.0) <-
was this, but choose 1 above

Choosing the 1st button above allows
you to select either Kpdf or Adobe
or 1 of several other choices.
(Do not click the Remeber choice
button).
Opera appears to work somewhat okay.

----------------------
With Firefox, there did not appear
to be an easy solution, but here is
an ugly workaround that may help
until a proper fix is figured-out.

1)Open up a console.
2)cd ~/.mozilla/firefox
3)ls
(you will want to cd to the
directory named ?????.default
4)cd ?????.default
5)ls
You should see a file named
mimeTypes.rdf and make a backup
6)cp mimeTypes.rdf mimeTypes.rdf.bak
Now edit the file, use the attached
info (see attachment)
7)kwrite mimeType.rdf
Now test it out on a website
containing a pdf, try google 6811
pdf and you should find a pdf file
for a 6811 chip. when you click the
link, Firefox should ask, do you
want to open it with Adobe or Kpdf

Hope this helps, unfortunately,
can't help much more than this.
