-   As fail safe as I would have predicted Linux Flash to be, I cannot boot it. I am very familiar with Linux, so this is perplexing. When it is booting, it stops with the
final messages: Kernal panic--not syncing. Fatal exception in interrupt.

Is there something wrong with the Linux Flash, or is my computer that is causing this problem? What can I do about it?

Hello,
This means you probably need to change some BIOS settings, AND/OR to pass
kernel options for your machine.
Also, some machines do not boot properly from USB and require you to use a
boot CD.
There is a "boot.iso" file on the key, and you need to make a boot CD out of it.
Then, boot from the CD (not the key) with the key plugged in.
During boot, before the "time out" exceeds, type after the "boot: " prompt :

<Nothing> (Just press Enter)
or:
Mandriva acpi
or:
Mandriva acpi=on
or:
Mandriva acpi=off
or:
Mandriva noapic
or:
Mandriva nolapic
or:
Mandriva noapic nolapic
or:
Mandriva acpi noapic nolapic
(Then the same as above with acpi=on or off)
You need to reboot for each try so it make take a long time.

Here is a list of possible options to pass to the kernel to boot:
http://www.cyberciti.biz/howto/question/static/linux-kernel-parameters.php

Do you manage to boot with one of these options?
FYI, if your hardware is brand new cutting edge hardware more recent than the
kernel on the key, in this particular case the kernel most probably doesn't
have the modules (drivers) for you hardware.

Regards

-   I made a CD disc copy of the ISO file on the Flash 2008, changed my BIOS to recognize the CD Drive
first when starting up, but it did not boot the Flash. After "searching" for a while, the computer
switched to booting from the hard disk. I then copied all of the files on the Flash to the CD and
tried again and was still unsuccessful. I know it is not my computer, because I can get an "on the
fly" booting from a Mandriva Spring 2007 disc I have, without it becoming part of my hard disc. What
do you think the problem might be?

The problem is that you have burned the boot.iso file on the CD which you
must not do, you must make a CD out of the iso image (once the CD made, when
browsing the CD you see multiple files and don't see a "boot.iso" file).
It must be made like burning a Mandriva Distro:

Here is the procedure:

-   Hello! I made a CD out of the iso image as you recommended. The boot.iso file was then NOT visible
on the CD so that checked out with your instructions. I then tried to boot, and the process proceeded
for about 1 minute, after which I got the following error message:

Code: Bad EIP Value
EIP: [<00000000>]_stext 0x3fefed20/0x20 SS:ESP 0068:f54cdcf4
Kernel panic_not syncing. Fatal exception
interrupt

-   I might also add, this was booting on the ISO from the CD disk, but with the Mandriva Flash 2008
mindstick plugged into a USB port.

However, when I tried booting without the Flash memory stick in the USB, I got a different message,
which did not appear to be fatal:

-sh can't access tty; job control turned off

There are many lines before, I would need those lines to help you.

-   I would like to give you more information, but is there a quick way of providing it? When the boot
states <Bad EIP value... Kernel not syncing Fatal exception > the keyboard is "frozen" I cannot
scroll or type a character. How much info do you need? Unfortunately, since the keyboard and screen
are frozen, there are only 30 or so lines visible......I do not know how to issue a copy command and
cut and paste with the frozen keyboard.

This is what is needed.
Do you have a digital camera? If yes, could you make a photograph of the
screen and send it in attachment?

However, FYI usualy such error message is a hardware problem, but we will
make shure with your "screenshot".

-   Hello. I have uploaded a snapshot of the frozen screen with high pixel detail so it is easy to read.

Not to digress, but I wanted to mention that I tried booting up using the Mandriva Flash 2008 on
another computer (different architecture, AMD 64) and it worked and I was able to use the operating
system on that computer. Therefore, I can conclude that there are no software booting errors on the
Flash.

cosmonaut2005_7408 : 05/06/08 02:14 AM : More info requested
-   I have tried uploading again because it does not show the screen with an uploaded pic. The pic is
smaller than 64K which is the restriction for this message board.

-   Hello. I have filled out a BUG report. The BUG incident is 41276. I have to mention that I do not
know what kind of hardware problem you think it is because as i mentioned in an earlier blog, the same
computer DOES boot on a Mandriva Spring 2007 Linux CD for "on the fly" computing without actually
installing it onto hard disc.

Thanks for your efforts.
