KDE desktop settings change, icons gone!

- The desktop icons disappeared and the icons on the KDE Menu for applications also disappeared. I was changing settings for the desktop using the KDE Control Center under Appearance and Themes and tried to change the settings for the background by using a different picture, and found a picture using the open dialog button. I also tried to use the Configure Your Computer option to create a new theme for the Splash Screen. After doing this, the icons disappeared. How can I get the icons back and still be able to change Desktop settings?
