Kateto_3274 : Incident created (02/01/08 07:59 PM)

- Hello, I installed Wengophone from the Mandriva repositories but it doesn't work. When I first executed it it took a long time to set my account, because it kept giving errors although I knew the username and password where right. After I finally succeeded logging in, it crashes and disappears as soon as I try making a test call.

Mandriva_Doctor_1691 : Reply received (03/01/08 01:36 PM)

- Hello,

Could you launch wengophone from a terminal?

do as folows:

Click on the Mandriva Menu -> Tools -> Konsole
type:
/sbin/logsave -s wengologs.txt wengophone

this above will launch wengophone via "logsave" which will log all the
wengophone messages in a file we called "wengologs.txt".

After the crash, please attach here the "wengologs.txt" file (it will be in
your "/home/logginName" directory).

Regards

- Hi, thanks for your reply.
I launched Wengophone from the console as you told me, and strangely enough
this time it doesn't crash; I even succeeded to make a test call. However,
the GUI shows up in English.
Again, I try to launch it from the menu; the interface is now in Spanish as
my Gnome session, but it takes an awful lot to launch. In addition, it
doesn't log me in no matter how many times I try.
What's wrong with the menu, then?

Here comes the log:

- Ok, launch the Kde Control Center, ( Menu -> Tools -> Control Center" )
Click on "Sound & Multimedia"
CLick on "Sound System"
Check-mark "Auto-suspend if idle after:" and set the value to 1 second.
Click the "Apply" button.

Try WengoPhone again from the Menu.

- Sorry, I'm using Gnome. Where do I find that?

Mandriva_Doctor_1691 : More info provided (07/01/08 09:46 AM)

- Ok, in gnome just click on:
System -> Preferences -> Sound
And deactivate "play system sounds".

Did this help?

- Sorry, I lost patience and uninstalled Wengophone. Then I downloaded the
official rpm package from the vendor's page and installed it by
right-clicking and choosing 'open with Software Installer', but it doesn't
work either. If I try to start it from the menu entry that remained after
installation without an icon, it seems to start on the task bar but then
disappears. If I type 'wengophone' in a terminal, I only get:
./wengophone: error while loading shared libraries: libssl.so.5: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory
This error message persists after I restore my ./wengophone profile to my
home directory (I had trown it in the garbage bin after uninstalling).
What else can I do?

This is normal, we do not provide this library, this is the a reason why
(among others) we don't support package s we don't provide. the official rpm
has not been compiled on the same version of mandriva (or not on mandriva)
and therefore fails to work. There is nothing to do unless compiling it
yourself from the source code.

Have you not tried what I did in my previous answer?
You can also try to edit the menu entry and remove the leading "soudwrapper"
before "wengophone" (with OUR rpm).

- Hi, sorry for the long delay, was busy.

Well, I uninstalled the 'official' version and installed a new one from the
Mandriva repositories. This time I found two, the one I installed first is
from the Contribution and was version 2.1.99.2 rev0-20070927125354
Qt 4.3.1, while now I've downloaded another version from the Non-free
repository, wengo 2.0. It has a new entry on the menu, and when I click there
it launches and logs in without problem. However, when trying a test call to
333 there's no sound whatsoever. I tried changing the configuration for
output and ringing device with no luck.
The entry on the menu is now the command 'qtwengophone' without
'soundwrapper'. I also tried launching it with soundwrapper from the command
line, again no sound. However, Rhythmbox can play music.
As you asked, I turned off system sounds, but that doesn't help.
What's next?

Mandriva_Doctor_1691 : More info provided (17/01/08 02:49 PM)

- In the gnome mixer, you can in the preferences add switches and levels which
are masked by default (right click on the speaker icon of the task bar and
select "Open The Volume Control" and "Edition -> Preferences", then close and
re-right click on the speaker icon of the task bar to réopen the volume
control mixer).
Try to see here if one is not muted.

Did you activate the "mic boost" (needs to be activated in the gnome sound
mixer).

- Back here, after much testing.
During some updates the Mandriva version of Wengohpone somehow got
reinstalled, and now I have the same entry "soundwrapper wengophone" in my menu.
Now the problem with this packet is clearer. Whenever I launch it from the
menu, it takes more than one minute to load, and it doesn't log me in at all.
I enter the right username and password, but logging in keeps failing. In the
meantime, neither Gnome nor any other program can play any sounds. Only after
I quit Wengophone other programs can play sounds. Launching from console with
or without 'soundwrapper' doesn't make any difference.
By the way, I forgot to mention that this laptop wouldn't play any sound at
all till I used the acpi_osi=!Linux boot option. Still now it won't play any
sound after resuming from suspend. The problem seems to be Toshiba's buggy
BIOS. May that be related to the problem with Wengophone?

- I forgot to mention, I made all sound controls visible and none is muted.

- Hello,

I'm just be curious.

It may be worth the try to see if the "skype" errata works for wengophone:
http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/Releases/Mandriva/2008.0/Errata#Skype_with_PulseAudio

Could you try this?

I won't guaranty it works, but it's worth the try.

Kateto_3274 : More info requested (29/01/08 08:41 PM)

- I couldn't find any .asoundrc file or directory in my home directory, so I
couldn't try this trick. There's no /etc/asound.conf file either.

More updates: Wengophone can ocasionally log me in automatically, but very
unreliably. This morning it's logged me in when I've first tried but not at
the second launch. Even after logging in, no sound whatsoever, neither from
the program nor from the entire system.

In Wengophone's configuration, I found this list of output and ringing devices:

(default) /dev/dsp
HDA Intel: CONEXANT analog (hw:0,0)
HDA Intel: Conexant digital (hw:0,1)
front
surround40
surround51
surround71
iec958
spdif
(default) default
dmix
(default) system
(default) default

The one activated is "(default) default". I've tried to test sound on all of
them but no result.

The list on Skype (which I also use and works just fine) is totally different:

Default device (default)
HDA Intel (hw:Intel,0)
HDA Intel (plughw:Intel,0)
HDA Intel (hw:Intel,1)
HDA Intel (plughw:Intel,1)

In addition, the Sound Preferences dialog in GNOME is set to 'Autodetect',
but I have actually tested all of them and only ESD outputs sound for all
parameters, with the exception of sound capture, which is set to ALSA.

It is normal.
You have the create it (them), and put what is mentionnend in the errata in
the file(s).
/etc/asound.conf is for all users.
.asoundrc in your home is for your user only.

So please try the errata.

- Finally, I tried writing the .asoundrc that I attach. Wengophone loaded and
logged in, it seemed to work, but there was no sound, as per my incident
#102749. I tried Amarok but if frose with the splash screen on it. After
closing Wengophone I launched Amarok again but got an error message about
xine not finding any sound driver.

- Do other gnome applications play sound?

Mandriva_Doctor_1691 : More info provided (19/02/08 09:59 AM)

- Did you also install "pulseaudio" and "gstreamer0.10-pulse" ?

Regards

Mandriva_Doctor_1691 : More info provided (19/02/08 10:01 AM)

- To install pulseaudio :
-Launch the Mandriva Control Center (Menu -> Tools -> System Tools ->
Configure Your Computer)
-Click on "Configure media sources for install and update"
-Click on "Add..."
-Click on the "Distribution sources" button (since 2007 do not click on the
"Official updates" button, the Official updates are already included in the
"Distribution sources")
-Once done, do not activate the unchecked Medias, they are for devloppment
purpose and would render your system unstable.
You have now access to plenty of software installable in one click in "Manage
software" of the "Mandriva Control Center", install "pulseadio" there.

Install also "xine-pulse" for xine to use "pulseaudio".

In the same way, if you use Adacious, you will need "audacious-pulse"

- When booting today the PCM volume control was muted. I demuted it and now the
sound seems to work, but it's not the first time that control moves all by
itself.

On my system I have these packages installed:

libpulseaudio0 - Shared library part of the polpyaudio sound server
Versión actualmente instalada: 0.9.6-3.2mdv2008.0

libpulsecore3 - Shared library part of the polpyaudio sound server
Versión actualmente instalada: 0.9.6-3.2mdv2008.0

I'm going to try to install the packages you told me.

Kateto_3274 : More info requested (25/02/08 01:42 AM)

- I just installed Pulseaudio. There's been a noticeable improvement in some
respects: system sounds don't make a rumbling echo anymore. However, when I
try to launch Wengophone from the menu it doesn't launch at all.
I think I'd rather give up on Wengophone and close this incident. If I still
have trouble with sound in other applications, I'll tell you on the other
incident I've opened.
